Building Visual Vocabulary

In our opening plenary session, Marc Schoenwiesner, PhD. will present, The Seeing Brain - Neuroscience and Vision. Exploring the issues of perception that affect anyone in the field of visual thinking, he asks: What happens in our brain when we look at images? Can we trust our perception? How do the mechanisms of visual perception influence the way we produce and appreciate visual art? Demonstrating with visual illusions and examples of visual art, Dr. Schoenwiesner will show off the effects of these processes on perception and their relevance to visual practice. There will also be small experiments and illusions that allow attendees to experience their visual brain at work.

Afterwards, the first day will follow two concurrent tracks, one for people entering our field, one for current visual practitioners:

Brandy Agerbeck and Lynn Carruthers share 25+ years of experience welcoming new practitioners to Graphic Recording 101, a comprehensive look into the wonderful world of capturing big ideas on big sheets of paper. GR101 provides a basic orientation to the craft, tools and techniques, hands on practice, and loads of real life stories and 'aha!' moments presented by two practitioners with very different working styles and clientele. The dynamic duo is back for a third year, earning rave reviews from people who had never touched marker to paper and seasoned recorders alike.

There is an additional $100 fee for materials and workbook ($75 for early birds, before June 1. Space is limited to 30, so sign up soon!

Several IFVP members in our field will co-facilitate Bring it On: Advanced Practices in Our Field. New this year is Speed Share: Where do you soar in your work? Where are you challenged or stumped? Here is your chance to ask your colleagues how they would handle it, and share your expertise as a seasoned practitioner. Our focus will be learning from our stories, seeing how we resolve challenges in different ways, and sharing our work as a talented community of practice.

Second is Simultaneous Recording: What does it look like when multiple practitioners record the same content? Do we ever get this chance? In this portion of the day, we will work have the chance to record the same content, then look at our diverse approaches.

We will culminate the day's discoveries through a facilitated conversation, capturing our learning. The day's fun and engaging design taps into our collective wisdom, and will result in a collaborative document of our working knowledge.

Montreal has a premier bike share program that was just launched this past spring. Let's take to the streets on two wheels, to explore Old Montreal and create the Largest Fleet of Cycling Visual Practitioners. This has never been done before, so if you want to participate, please contact Julie Gieseke to sign up for this activity!

Thursday, August 6
Voices within the Community

Our second day is chock full of opportunities to share best practices. We'll begin with a panel discussion, The Business of Visual Practice. Moderated by 2009 Planning Committee Chair, Tania von Allmen, a wide range of Visual Practitioners will discuss how they work, have built their practice and the unique niche they have created. For example:

Internal Corporate Strategy
Community organizing
Recording Large Events
Educational Contexts
Personal Coaching
Information Design
History Map/Mural creation
Creativity/Brainstorming Facilitation
This panel is still forming, and we invite your input. Please contact Tania von Allmen at tania@luminositystudio.com by July 15 with your ideas and questions.

World Cafe has embedded within its very design, an efficient means of harvesting the thoughts and comments of all the participants. So how can we add the most value to the process through visualization? Nick Payne has discovered a way of doing this and the feedback from clients is universally positive. In Metaphorical Approaches to Graphic Recording of World Café, he'll share his synthetic process, which assesses all the outcomes of all the cafe discussions and generates imagery from them, rather than from large group call-out harvests. Nick will use this example as a means of opening up discussion about working in World Cafe and to assess and map the different options that are available to us and to clients.

Thursday afternoon will be dedicated to Open Interest Space (OIS). This is time set aside for emergent topics that spring up during the conference. Built on the idea that the richest part of conference are the conversations during the breaks, it is a small group format in an informal setting. Bring your own case study or question! Feel free to prepare handouts or bring materials that will aid discussion. We'll invite earlier speakers to dive deeper into their topics, but it's open to everyone to bring a topic to the table. Visit the 2008 Thursday and Friday OIS pages to see last year's topics. We will close the afternoon with the small groups merging and sharing some highlights of what they learned and discussed.

Thursday evening, we continue an IFVP tradition, The Graphics Jam! It is a communal, rapid-fire visual brainstorm, bringing great connections and inspirations. The hundreds of images produced during this evening social becomes a book that is shared after the conference for all attendees. Make sure you are here to contribute and receive this valuable resource.

Friday, August 7
Our Voice to the World

After two days of internal focus on our work, our final day looks outward and onward with the topic Our Voice to the World. Our morning plenary presenter will inspire and engage us on the ways in which we can impact our current networks and build new relationships with the power of our visual practice. With an IFVP-friendly business growth and marketing focus, they will help us build momentum towards our contribution to the world.

Training powerhouse, Donna McGeorge shares her wisdom in Teaching Others Our Craft. She will show practitioners a framework they can use with their own clients, with techniques that she has used consistently and with great results. It is training that sticks! This session will get you in gear to train your clients who are asking for this. Now you can!

Using our own best methods, our conference closing employs visuals templates to reflect on the conference experience and decide on your next steps. You'll leave with a clear picture of how you'll take your individual voice and practice out into the world!

We've got a few more sessions up our sleeves, and encourage you to check back to this page for all the latest updates. A bientot à Montréal! (See you soon in Montreal for you Americans!)

Thank you to Tania von Allmen for this year's conference logo design.
