Open Group Coaching: Listening from the Insight Out

To overcome anger and violence, we have to be willing to start a meaningful conversation and dialogue. That dialogue starts with listening. In this two hour workshop, we will explore listening to ourselves and listening to others, and what we need in order to come to the table.

"Every judgment is a tragic expression of a need." - Marshall Rosenberg, thought leader in non-violent communication

During this session we will look at a model for listening and practice listening not just for what is said but what might be unsaid. We will practice tangible skills in the art of empathetic listening, particularly in the virtual spaces. Listening to others is more effective when we understand and meet our own needs. The first part of this workshop focuses on level 1 listening, where we take a deep dive into our personal needs and mental models. From there, we will move to level 2 listening, learning how to use paraphgrasing and powerful questions to draw out issues and interests of others.

We will assess our individual strengths and growth areas, when it comes to listening and communication. These skills take time to practice. If you've ever been in a fitness program, you know that one 30 minute workout will not make a dent in your fitness goal. You have to create a practice and a life style. You will have some time to practice here, but the important work will take place after this session when you actualize these tips at work and home. We will give you a worksheet that you can use to design your listening game plan.

Special Notes

  • While coaching can help with processing life events, it does not replace therapeutic services from a licensed psychologist or psychiatrist. At any point in our journey, if I sense that you may benefit from therapy, I will recommend that you take this path before continuing or alongside coaching.
  • To respect the privacy of the sessions, I will not be recording these sessions.
