GR201 with Anthony Weeks
The Art and Ethics of Listening in Visual Practice - a full day workshop conducted on Tuesday, July 30, 2019 from 9am to 5pm
Current SIGNED IN IFVP member $750 Nonmember $1000

What separates visual practice (graphic recording, graphic facilitation, visual scribing, strategic illustration) from merely drawing pictures and making marks on a page? It is the listening. Although we often give lip service to listening as a core component of our practice, we have not committed ourselves as intentionally to the development of our listening skills as we have our visual/artistic skills. This workshop is all about centering listening in visual practice and is available to visual practitioners at all levels of experience. Through a variety of listening exercises, group discussions, experiential activities, and individual reflection, participants will:

  • Develop an awareness of listening as a choice, an intention, and a competency
  • Discover skills and strategies for creating space (internal and external) for intentional and deep listening to happen
  • Understand a taxonomy of different listening styles and their functions and attributes in the world
  • Explore one’s own listening styles and how they serve one’s relationships with others
  • Practice listening by making it visible and manifest on the page
  • Create a learning plan to strengthen one's abilities as a flexible listener, depending on context, need, and ethics around listening
GR201 will be led by Anthony Weeks, MSW, MFA. Along with experience as a clinical social worker and documentary filmmaker, Anthony has 20 years of experience as a graphic facilitator, visual storyteller, and public listener. He has worked with teams around the world to deepen their listening, discover their collective wisdom, and turn data into stories. For the past three years, Anthony has been researching listening by interviewing people across contexts and geographies to find out how they listen and why it matters.
