About

Hello! Thank you for visiting the online home of the IFVP, and stopping by my page. I hope my sharing below will give you glimpses into the genesis and heart of welenia studios. Feel free to drop me a line anytime for a chat, at welenia.w@gmail.com, or weleniastudios@gmail.com :)

"A new way of thinking depends on a new way of seeing."

At the end of a very graced year of unpaid leave, learning to live thoughtfully and wakefully, I decided to take a leap in a leap year, and established my own visual practice - welenia studios - on 29 Feb 2012.

At the studios, I support individuals, groups and communities by facilitating learning through visual curation and design. I depict how people think, feel, converse, decide, and make meaning - through visual recording*, visual facilitation design, and information visualisation. It gives me great satisfaction to walk with people this way, seeing them make more wakeful choices as they pursue what matters. Good questions, authentic conversations, and compelling stories make my day.

It has been an eye-opening and rewarding journey thus far :) Meeting and partnering people from the government, business and not-for-profit sectors, to tell visual stories in areas spanning public policy, national governance, strategic foresight and scenario planning, education, leadership, healthcare, family, social service, racial and religious harmony, urban renewal, and the arts. When these areas intersect and overlap, like during the 2012-2013 Our Singapore Conversation (OSC) national citizen dialogues and 2014-2015 Central Provident Fund (CPF) focus groups, scribing plays an even more significant role in creating life-giving space for unique voices, resonances, and shared differences to be heard.

Part of the power of live visuals lies in its scaleability. From executive programmes and masterclasses, to strategic planning and visioning retreats, business/team meetings, community dialogues and medium-large scale forums... Scribing in varied settings, I have learnt to read and respect the needs and nature of each group and space, and design complementary visual approaches. As a testament to scaleability, many people from different walks of life are also keen to know how to use live visuals in their work and lives. I join and equip them in their discovery by conducting occasional customised workshops in visual recording, visual facilitation design, and/or visual notetaking skills. I have also had the privilege of sharing my reflections and questions with art educators, professional communicators, and fellow visual practitioners as a guest speaker/panelist.

Before starting welenia studios, I served the Civil Service College (CSC), Singapore, for 10 years in various roles, including Senior Learning Designer and Research Associate. I also co-pioneered a Strategic Foresight Unit at the Ministry of Finance (MOF), Singapore. My growing up years in the heart of government provided an excellent foundation for big-picture thinking and sensitivity to detail, that are still key to my work and service now. It was also during this decade of learning and experimenting that I became inspired to and trained in visual practice by The Grove Consultants International, and Alphachimp Studio Inc.
